In Vietnam, people believe that the three Kitchen Gods determine the family's fortune. Every year, on December 23, families say goodbye to the Kitchen Gods and send offerings to the ancestors. Among the offerings, Northern people often offer a live carp and then release it into rivers and lakes. Some families put fish in wells or tanks and raise large fish with the hope that the fish will take care of the family's prosperity, that their children and grandchildren will pass the exam and do well in business.
