Hoa Lu Ancient Capital – Explore Vietnam’s Royal Past
Your journey through Ninh Binh begins with a step back in time. Nestled among karst mountains and rice fields, Hoa Lu Ancient Capital was once Vietnam’s political and cultural center in the 10th and 11th centuries. Today, its quiet temples and dramatic scenery offer travelers both history and tranquility.
Walk Through History
Visitors enter through stone gates into a complex of courtyards, gardens, and restored sanctuaries. It’s easy to imagine the grandeur of the old citadel while walking along shaded paths where kings once held court.
Temple of King Dinh Tien Hoang
Dedicated to Vietnam’s first emperor, this temple sits at the foot of Ma Yen Mountain. Visitors pass through three wooden gates before reaching the main altar. The structure preserves traditional architecture with carved dragons, phoenixes, and scenes of battle, reflecting King Dinh’s role in unifying the country. The courtyard and surrounding hills give the temple a solemn yet peaceful atmosphere.
Temple of King Le Dai Hanh
A short walk away stands the temple honoring King Le Dai Hanh, who succeeded King Dinh and continued building the nation’s stability. This sanctuary features distinctive woodwork and intricate stone pillars, with altars dedicated to the king and his queen. The temple’s quieter setting makes it ideal for reflection, and the view of limestone peaks rising beyond its walls adds to the sense of history embedded in the landscape.
A Scenic Setting
Surrounded by limestone cliffs and rice paddies, Hoa Lu feels like an open-air museum. The natural backdrop enhances the sense of calm and makes every photograph look timeless.
